Pop music, derived from the word ‘’popular music’’ was invented back in the 50’s as the softer version of Rock and Roll. Pop music has an eclectic tune, often being a blend of dance, Latin, rock and country, with the verse-chorus format making up the lyrical structure. Pop music has come a long way since the 50’s overtaking soul, R&B and rock in terms of popularity.

10. Selena Gomez
Selena Marie Gomez started her mainstream career as an actor in the show ‘Barney & Friends, and went on to star in her own Disney produced show Wizards of Waverly Place that ran for six years between 2007 and 2012. After the series reached its end, she went on to release music, feature in several films and musical networks.
At such a young age she already has her own production stable July Moon Productions. She later formed her own band Selena & the Scene, and together they have released three studio albums. She has her own fragrance ‘Selena Gomez’, clothing line ‘Kmart’ and is a UNICEF ambassador.

Arian Grande is probably the cutest thing to happen in the world of pop in recent years. Starting off in Broadway musical, the super gorgeous and multi-talented Grande signed up for Nickelodeon’s show Victorious in 2009, as Cat Valentine. She has gone on to release 14 music albums and has starred in 12 films including ‘’Batman Lego Movie’’ scheduled for a 2017 release.
She has headlined a total of nine highly successful world tours, most recently ‘The Sweet Sweet Fantasy Tour’ in 2016. She is often regarded as the queen of pop, having started singing the genre when it was finally a big deal especially in the US.

Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson was a gospel artist before shifting genres to pop. Having sang in church in her childhood years and signed to record label Red Hill Records as a teenager. Her debut album was unsuccessful and Red Hill Records released her. She however managed to work with top producers and was eventually signed by Capitol records after being dropped by two other high profile stables.
She released ‘’I Kissed A Girl’’ in 2008 and this marked the start of her rise to fame. She has since released three other albums all of them chart topping. She has toured eight times most recently the Prismatic World Tour in 2016.

Lady Gaga is one of the most popular pop artists, having managed to gather influence form her ‘’Monsters’’ of fans worldwide. Prior to pursuing music she used to perform in theatres and plays at NYU. Onika Tanya Maraj rose to fame after releasing her mixtapes in 2007. She has since won 40 awards to date including ten BET Awards and seven BET Hip Hop Awards.

Robyn Rihanna Fenty started off recording singles before being signed to Def Jam Records. She released Music of the Sun and instantly rose to fame under Jay-Z’s mentorship. After a series of albums and collaborations with Eminem, Jay Z, T.I and others, she gained international recognition. She has released a total of eight highly successful albums, her most recent being ‘’Anti’’ in 2016.
She also took Hollywood by storm, starring in ten movies one of them being the animated movie ‘’Home’’. She has toured seven times her latest being the Anti World Tour in 2016. Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter started her music career at a young age and after a string of singing and dancing competitions, she and the group Destiny’s Child finally broke into mainstream music. The group was internationally renowned and popular, and was one of the best-selling all-girl music group of all time. The group split in 2006 and she later released another solo album titled ‘B’Day’.
She went into acting, earning a golden globe nomination for her performance in ‘Dreamgirls’. She also starred in Pink Panther (2006) and Obsessed (2009) and ‘Life is but a Dream’ (2013).
