The Hindi film industry, grandly named the “Bollywood”, is one of the world’s largest movie production centers. The first film to be featured in India was a silent one in black and white – the “Raja Harishchandra”- and was produced by none other than Dadasaheb Phalke in 1913. As time passed, the industry grew, as did the number of movies it produced. From the 1960s, Bollywood began to achieve major commercial success more frequently, and the income multiplied manifold.
Previously, the industry’s success was determined by the longevity of the box office than revenue earned. However, as the competition rose, the increasing piracy threats, and later the arrival of alternative and smarter media, the longevity of films decreased exponentially and revenue was all that started to matter. 10. Chennai Express
Released in 2013 and directed by Rohit Shetty, the movie, Chennai Express, grossed about 423 crore INR worldwide. Chennai Express was released in the overseas markets on 8 August and a day later in India. The movie broke several box office records both in India as well as abroad. It became the quickest film to collect 1 billion INR (US$16 million) net domestically.
9. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo
Released in 2015 and directed by Sooraj R. Barjatya, the movie made a worldwide gross of 432 crore INR. Salman Khan and Sonam Kapoor are the lead roles in the movie. Prem Ratan Dhan Payo earned ₹40.35 crore net on its very day of opening, leaving the record done by the movie Bajrangi Bhaijaan behind.
Released in 2016 and directed by Pa. Ranjith, this blockbuster action movie made a worldwide gross of about 477-499 crore INR. The film was initially released in Tamil and a week later in dubbed versions in Telugu and Hindi language. The movie was released on 3200 screens all across India, of which 2200 were in South India alone. When it was released, it had the largest opening weekend for any Indian film worldwide.
Released in 2016 and directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, this wonderfully inspired movie Sultan made a worldwide gross of 584 crore INR. The movie became the seventh highest grossing Indian film of all time. The film stars Anushka Sharma and Salman Khan in a wrestling background.
6. Dhoom 3
Released in 2013 and directed by Rohit Shetty, this action-thriller movie made a worldwide gross of about 585 crore INR. Being the 3rd installment of the Dhoom series, the movie features top-notch actors in the lead. The movie was made on a budget of ₹175 crore, and was the most expensive Indian film, until being beaten by Baahubali: The Beginning. The film went on to gross 4 billion INR worldwide in just ten days and became the highest-grossing Bollywood film of all time in international markets at the time.
5. Bajrangi Bhaijaan
The movie Bajrangi Bhaijaan was released during Eid in 2015. Directed by Kabir Khan it grossed about 626 crore INR worldwide. It was the first Bollywood movie to cross the 300 crore INR considering the net collection at the domestic box office. The movie took only 9 days to earn 200 crore INR from its run in the domestic box offices. It ranks third after “PK” and “Dhoom 3” for being the fastest film to cross the 200 crore INR target.
4. Baahubali: The beginning
This widely popular movie was released in 2015 and directed by S.S. Rajamouli.The movie’s worldwide gross is about 650 crore INR. The film was produced on a budget of ₹180 crore which made it the most expensive Indian film at the time it was released. It became the highest-grossing film in India and the third-highest grossing Indian film worldwide, and the highest-grossing South Indian film at the time of its release.
Released in 2014, “PK” is a sci-fi comedy that satires the Indian culture and customs. The movie was directed by Rajkumar Hirani and grossed about 792 crore INR worldwide. “PK” is the first Indian movie that grossed more than 700 crore INR worldwide. It also became the first Indian film to gross 630 crore INR worldwide, crossing the US$100 million mark.
2. Baahubali 2: The Conclusion
Once again directed by S.S. Rajamouli, the movie hit the big screen on 28 April 2017. It is a sequel to Baahubali: The Beginning. The worldwide gross for Baahubali 2 is a stupendous 1725 crore INR. The movie starring Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty and Tamannaah, collected 800 crore INR within only 6 days of its release. It became the first ever Indian film to cross a worldwide gross of 1000 crore INR and that too in only ten days!
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Dangal was released in 2016. The worldwide gross of the movie is a majestic 2024.76 crore INR. The movie was screened at the Beijing International Film Festival in April 2017. The film won several awards in the 62nd Filmfare awards It is the highest-grossing Indian film and the fifth highest grossing non-English film, to collect over 2,000 crore INR, of which more than 1,200 crore INR was earned in China alone.
This ranking listed above comprise of the highest grossing Indian films which consist of movies made in various other languages. These values are not exactly true as often there is an error in estimate and valuation; it is more of an approximation. Indian films have been released in markets around the world since the early 20th century.
As of 2003, Bollywood has markets in over 90 countries where the movies are screened. During the first decade of the 21st century, there was a constant rise in the ticket price, a doubling and then tripling in the number of theatres and furthermore, an increase in the number of prints of a film that was being released. All these factors further increased the box office collections. The majority of highest-grossing Indian films are from Bollywood industry producing Hindi movies.
