India being a country where agriculture is the primary source of income, the potato is a very important crop. Potato is mainly a Rabi crop that is they grow more preferably in winter tolerating the frost but nowadays due to the highly advanced method they can be cultivated throughout the area keeping in mind their demand. They have a production of 659.61 thousand tones of potato per year. With a total land of 79,710 km square and 42.21 hectares of agricultural land for the purpose of potato production, they rank tenth for the production of potatoes. After cultivation, they got 13,972 kilograms of potatoes per hectares. With suitable climatic condition favouring production of potatoes, they are able to export potatoes to the neighbouring states also.
They are known to produce approximately 676.01 thousand tonnes of potato per year. Having twenty-one districts known to cultivate potatoes they are able to manage a position in the list of largest potato cultivars. 29.47 hectares of their land are devoted to the cultivation of this agriculturally important crop named potato. The state is known to have an approximate yield of 22,939 kilograms of potatoes from per hectares of land.
They produce 698.30 thousand tonnes of potato per annum. Being a state in southern part of the country they are privileged with adequate rainfall pattern and climatic condition necessary for the production of potato. 44.4 hectare of agricultural land is used for the purpose of potato cultivation here. 15,727kg per hectare is the quantity of potato produced there.
975.27 thousand tones is the total potato production of the state Assam making the state rank seventh in the list of top potato-producing states. This state is situated in the northeast region of India and is blessed with adequate soil type. With a total land of 78,440 square kilometres, 99.7 hectares of land is subjected to potato cultivation producing a total of 9,775-kilogram of potato per yielding.
They have a production of 2132.31 thousand tones of potato in every year. Being situated in northern part of the country they get quality soil for the production of potatoes. With a total area of 50,382 square kilometres, 85.25 hectares of land is under potation cultivation area. 25,012 kg is the total yield of the state per hectares.
5. MADHYA PRADESH
They are known to produce 2299.00 thousand tonnes of potato yearly. This state is located in central India and has all the suitable factors needed for the quality production of potatoes. 108.87 hectare of agricultural land is devoted to the cultivation of potato here. They are known to have a total yielding of 21.117 kg of potatoes per hectare of land making them fifth among the top potato-producing states.
They have a total production of 2499.73 thousand tones of potato per annum. With the title of the largest state in terms of area, they are known to devote most of their fertile land to agricultural process and potato is one of the most important commercial crops cultivated here. Though due to dry atmosphere most of the time, they get less area for the production process but due to the availability of modern techniques for agriculture they manage to yield around 30,758 kg of potatoes per hectare. About 81.2 hectares of land here is denoted as the potato producing area.
6640.60 thousand tones is the total potato production in the state of Bihar. Agricultural being their primary source of income, they produce potato which is excellent in terms of both quality and quantity. Having a total of 38 districts and an area 94,163 square kilometre, potato production is done in the majority of districts and in 322.5 hectares of land. 20,593 kg is their total production per hectares.
2. WEST BENGAL
They produce 11591.30 thousand tonnes of potato in every annual year. Having all suitable factors present here for the production of potatoes they rank second in the largest potato producing states. With Bay of Bengal below them, they get the most favourable air for potato production. Cultivation of potato is in the very good state here and provides employment to a lot of peoples here. 386.61 hectares of land here is in the potato cultivation area. Their yield per hectare is known to be 29,982 kg.
1. UTTAR PRADESH
They are known to produce 14430.28 thousand tonnes of potato on a yearly basis. Being most populated state of India; this is their own requirement to produce a lot of potatoes as it is being consumed by every household. Having 75 districts of which most of them are known to have potato cultivation giving 23,901 kg of potatoes per hectares. They have a total area of 603.76 hectares of land meant for the cultivation of potatoes which is quite large in terms of the area. The state is known to produce 23,901 kg of potatoes per hectare of land.
Besides these states, others states of India are also known to produce quantity potatoes. India being vast in both terms of population and area needs a huge amount of production to satisfy the need. Production of potatoes from India is able to fulfil the requirement in both national and international level also.
