England is the home of football. The game was invented and first codified in London 154 years ago, changing the sporting world in eternity. Football has come a significantly long way, from the era of medieval football, to now when the game is fully professional.
English football governing body the FA brought serenity and calm to the beautiful game, and the players are reaping the benefits in unimaginable ways. Football finances have come a long way, with Willie Groves, the first English player to switch clubs at a fee in the region of $120 back in 1893, to the recent most expensive transfer activity involving Manchester United and Paul Pogba.

10. James Milner – $9 million
James Philip Milner aged 34 is an English professional footballer who plays for English team Liverpool as their main left back. At a young age his talents in long-distance running, cricket and football were well recognised as he would represent his school in all sports but mostly football. At the age of 10 he joined Leeds United academy playing alongside fellow teammate Wayne Rooney. Making progress at the academy Milner would later on be recruited by the England coach to represent his country in the under-15 and 17 teams.
He made his debut in 2002 where he became the youngest player to ever score a goal in the premier league. After making his presence known in Leeds United he caught the attention of other teams such as Aston Villa, Newcastle, Manchester City and now Liverpool. His role in the field is mainly as a winger but James has proved to be a great deal by providing assists for his team. 9. Ashley Young – $9 million
Born in England 31-year-old Ashley Simon Young is a professional soccer player who plays for English record holders Manchester United as a winger. Ashley made his debut in 2003 playing for Watford. He made good performance on the field which would later earn him a lime light and teams would as well start showing interest in his style of play. Aston Villa caught sight of him and he made his presence known earning a spot on the first team. He then scored 7 goals and winning 30 caps for England national team. Young is mostly known for his diving ability in the penalty box which would raise question marks for referees. Ashley has made appearances for England’s under-21 and later on made to the senior team as a starting player.
8. Michael Carrick – $16.5 million
Born in England 35-year-old Michael plays as an emergency center back for English team Manchester United as well as for England national team as a central midfielder. Carrick started playing soccer at the age of 12 showing potential out on the field would then earn him a spot starting for West Ham as a center forward.
After making 150 appearances for the Hammers he would then make a move to play for Tottenham making 75 appearances for the team scoring only 2 goals. He would then make a move to United where he made more than 50 appearances in his season debut. He also proved his way being selected to play for England’s under-18 and 21 teams. Carrick does not play with pace but he is well prolific in his ball distribution and provide assists for his team.
7. Joe Cole – $27 million
Joseph John “Joe” Cole aged 35 plays for Tampa Bay Rowdies as an attacking midfielder. Cole started his career with English team West Ham United as he showed potential which would earn him a spot in the first team playing over 120 games for his team. After the Hammers suffered relegation Joe would then later on make a move on to Chelsea where he played 280 games winning up to 10 trophies. Cole has made national appearances for his team playing in the under-16, 18 and 21 occasionally appearing 56 times scoring ten times. As gifted as he is he creates chances for his team and his quick ability helps him maneuver the ball around his opponents easily.
6. Ashley Cole – $35 million
36-year-old left back plays for English club LA Galaxy is one of the best defenders in his generation as many would say. Ashley started his career in 1999 as he made his debut playing for Arsenal where after making 156 appearances he was able to score 8 goals. Not much goals for him in Arsenal did he score but he was able to win 2 premier league titles with the team as well as FA cup trophies.
In 2006 he would then make a move to rival club Chelsea where he would step up his game earning him more honors with up to 229 appearances with seven goals winning the UEFA champions cup trophy. He established himself as the England national team from the early 2000’s till 2014 when he retired. He has won 107 caps making him England’s most capped full back defender.
5. John Terry – $39 million
36 year old John Terry plays as center back and captains team Chelsea as well as England national team. As a young boy he was in the West Ham United team’s academy then at the age of 14 he moved to Chelsea as he started playing as a midfielder but due to a shortage of players Terry was posted as center back. An aerial threat he is considered as he is well known for heading balls with power not forgetting his aggression and tactical awareness makes him one of the best defenders in England. Making a total of 488 appearances and scoring 40 goals Terry has become Chelsea’s most successful captain through the years making him the team’s top scoring defender.
4. Frank Lampard – $45 million
The 38 year old footballer and also writer plays as a midfielder for American club New York FC in the Major League Soccer. Lampard started his career at West Ham United following in his father’s footsteps. After earning his spot in the first team he would then help the team finish at a 5th spot which was the club’s ever finishing number. He was then sold to Chelsea where he would establish himself as one of the best midfielders making 164 appearances being a record for an outfield player. He is Chelsea’s all time goal scorer with 211 goals in all competitions. Lampard has been capped 106 times by England as he is the nation’s best penalty taker.
3. Steven Gerrard – $60 million
The 36 year old skipper Steven Gerrard is a central midfielder who plays for LA Galaxy. Gerrard is mostly known for his time at Liverpool where he captained the team. He was one of the youngest players to ever join Liverpool for he made his debut in 1998 then later on earn his first team spot in 2000. He would then score his first two goals during a UEFA champion’s cup trophy to defeat Milan. Gerrard has only been associated with two clubs in which he has made a total number of appearances of 538 games scoring 125 goals. He is regarded as one of the best midfielders of his generation and he has recently retired from international soccer.

Rio Gavin Ferdinand is a 38 year old professional soccer player who plays as a center back. At his youth he would engage himself in football and he would then join the Hammer’s academy making was debut in 1996. Later on in 1997 he earned himself a spot on England’s national team making him the youngest defender to make an international appearance. His footballing skills would then attract the likes of Manchester united winning the English premier league title 6 times together with other 15 trophies. He plays uniquely with his tactical defending ability with well-timed tackles. He was a great leader on the field which then makes him among the best defenders of his time.

At United Wayne was able to win the premier league trophy 5 times as well as the UEFA Champions cup once together with other cups just to name but a few. He is currently holding a record for scoring the most goals for his club totalling up to 180 goals at Old Trafford. He has made appearances for England in under-15, 17 and 19 teams becoming the youngest player ever to represent England. He is the nation’s youngest goal scorer and regarded as England’s best player.
